Abstract submission

Abstract submission will open on 16th April 2018. We encourage abstract submissions of collaborative work from all specialities in one of 3 categories: Written abstracts, visual abstracts and student abstracts. We also invite submissions to our ‘one stop research clinic’ which will provide expert guidance and feedback on new project proposals.

Written Abstracts

Submitted work should be one of the following:

  • A completed study or those which contain early results
  • A study currently recruiting
  • A study due to start recruitment in the immediate future

All submissions will be reviewed by a consultant panel. The top scoring abstracts will be selected for oral presentation in the International Journal of Surgery Prize Session at NRCM 2018 with the chance of winning $100 of book vouchers. Selected high-scoring abstracts will also be published in the International Journal of Surgery Protocols.

Visual abstracts

Visual abstracts are visual summaries of the information contained within an abstract. The goal is to inform the viewer about the KEY findings of the study.

Submitted work should be one of the following:

  • A completed study or those which contain early results
  • A study currently recruiting
  • A study due to start recruitment in the immediate future

All suitable submitted visual abstracts will be uploaded to the NRCM2018 Twitter page on the 1st October 2018. Social media engagement with each visual abstract with be analysed and scored with the top 10 scoring abstracts featuring in the ‘Top of the Tweets’ session at NRCM 2018. The attention scores and on the day judging in combination will be used to select an overall winner for the International Journal of Surgery Prize of $100 of book vouchers for the best visual abstract.

Additional guidance on creating a visual abstract

Visual abstract submission is a 2 step process.

  1. Complete your details in the online form. You will also be asked to submit a draft tweet about your study on this submission form, that we can use for promotion of the study during #NRCM2018 (120 characters)
  2. E-mail your visual abstract (as a PowerPoint of PDF file) to NWRCsurgery@gmail.com Make the subject of your e-mail “NRCM 2018 Visual abstract”; include your name in the body of the e-mail; and ensure the name corresponds to the name used to register and the e-mail is sent from the e-mail address submitted on the online form.

Student abstracts

We invite submissions from medical students for proposals for a future collaborative project. This proposal can be supported by data from previous projects the student has done.

The top scoring abstracts will be selected for oral in the International Journal of Surgery Prize session at NRCM 2018 with the chance of winning $100 of book vouchers and advice and guidance from STARSurg and the National Research Collaborative with view to designing a future a national collaborative study. Selected abstracts will also be published in IJS protocols.

One Stop Research Clinic

A ‘One Stop Research Clinic’ with a panel of experts will be available at NRCM 2018 to provide feedback and assistance with further development of new research. Submissions for this session should be studies which are currently in development and have not yet started recruitment. Sessions will be allocated on a first come first served basis
